Steven Hayes convicted in Petit murder case

Steven Hayes and a codefendant allegedly invaded the Petits’ Cheshire, CT, home around 3:00 AM on July 23, 2007, taking a husband, wife, and their daughters prisoner. At 9:00 AM, the intruders forced the wife, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, to go to the bank and withdraw a large sum of money. She was reportedly able to alert a bank employee that her family was being held captive, but by the time police arrived at the house it was on fire. The suspects tried to flee, but crashed their getaway vehicle into two police cars that were part of a roadblock.William Petit, the husband, had been badly beaten, but managed to escape his home with severe head wounds and seek help at a neighbor’s house. Autopsies of Hawke-Petit and her daughters showed that Hawke-Petit was strangled and her daughters died of smoke inhalation. More information here.

Mexican journalist’s burned body found

Mexican authorities reported Monday they have found the dismembered, burned body of a Mexican journalist kidnapped in 2007. Officials believe the journalist, Rodolfo Rincon Taracena, was killed by members of the Los Zetas cartel killed Taracena for his reporting on drug activity in the Gulf Coast city of Villahermosa. Suspect Arrested In Rape and Burning Of Elderly Woman

Police have arrested a door-to-door magazine salesman accused of raping an elderly Grand Prairie, TX woman and then setting setting her on fire. The 78-year-old victim was assaulted Monday at home, doused with rubbing alcohol and set on fire. Brimmer said the woman was hospitalized Wednesday with second-degree burns. Her name has not been disclosed. More information here.

77 Year Old Landlord Set On Fire With Gasoline

A man has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly dousing his 77-year-old former landlord with gasoline and lighting him on fire early Tuesday in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood. Donald Hardy, 28, of the 800 block of East 65th Street, was charged Friday afternoon with attempted first-degree murder, according to police News Affairs.  More information here.
