Steven Hayes convicted in Petit murder case

Steven Hayes and a codefendant allegedly invaded the Petits’ Cheshire, CT, home around 3:00 AM on July 23, 2007, taking a husband, wife, and their daughters prisoner. At 9:00 AM, the intruders forced the wife, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, to go to the bank and withdraw a large sum of money. She was reportedly able to alert a bank employee that her family was being held captive, but by the time police arrived at the house it was on fire. The suspects tried to flee, but crashed their getaway vehicle into two police cars that were part of a roadblock.William Petit, the husband, had been badly beaten, but managed to escape his home with severe head wounds and seek help at a neighbor’s house. Autopsies of Hawke-Petit and her daughters showed that Hawke-Petit was strangled and her daughters died of smoke inhalation. More information here.

Ohio woman fatally stabbed in front of her child

A woman was stabbed to death in front of her son by a former boyfriend who died of self-inflicted stab wounds after a police chase, Lebanon, Ohio police said this morning. Shena Lee Nolan, 32, was stabbed several times by her ex-boyfriend after an argument in front of her 8-year-old son at her apartment about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Lebanon Assistant Police Chief Bob Hawley. The boy was not injured. “What kind of a person stabs a mother anyway, but then to do it front of a child?” Hawley reportedly said Thursday morning. Nolan was taken to Atrium Medical Center in Middletown, where she was pronounced dead. More information here.

Atlanta Woman Found Stabbed to Death in Her Home

Atlanta police reportedly say 4 children found their 35-year-old mother’s body on the bathroom floor, after coming home from school. Keith Meadows of the Atlanta Police Department reportedly says Yolanda Johnson had been stabbed four or five times. Her body was found Thursday afternoon in her apartment, which is near Georgia Tech. Meadows says there were signs of a struggle in the kitchen and bathroom. More information here.

2 Shot in California Church

Police are searching for a hooded gunman who horrified the congregation of a California church when he paced the aisles then pulled out a gun and shot two teenagers. No arrests have yet been made in the Sunday shooting at New Gethsemane Church of God in Christ in Richmond, California, according to police. The gunman and two companions walked into the church, scanned the pews and fired about five shots, hitting a 14-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man, as about 100 people looked on, police say. Baby Killed, Mother Critically Injured by Man with Battle Ax

A Las Vegas man reportedly attacked a mother and her 4 month old son, using a medieval-style battle ax.  The crime appears to be a random act, and the suspect in custody, reportedly identified as 33 year old Harold E. Montague, denies remembering the attack, police say.   Montague also is reportedly accused of stabbing his sister-in-law, a mentally disabled woman, more than 20 times with a point of the ax shortly before he allegedly attacked the mother and her baby. Sex offender convicted in WI triple homicide

A convicted sex offender was found guilty Tuesday of strangling and stabbing his neighbor and her two teenage children in their trailer home in southern Wisconsin. Jurors deliberated for only about 90 minutes before convicting James Koepp of Janesville of three counts of first-degree intentional homicide in the deaths of 38-year-old Danyetta Lentz, her 17-year-old daughter, Nicole, and her 14-year-old son, Scott. Koepp faces mandatory life in prison when he is sentenced April 27. District Attorney David O’Leary said the victims’ DNA on Koepp’s clothes and his DNA under Lentz and Nicole’s fingernails was crucial in convincing jurors. Koepp could not explain how it got there, O’Leary said. More information here.

3 armed men rob woman, kill man, hold baby at gunpoint

Armed men struck an Oak Cliff apartment complex late Tuesday, holding a baby at gunpoint and robbing her mother before fatally shooting a 32-year-old man and injuring his two brothers in a separate incident. Investigators believe the three robbers first accosted the baby’s mother in the complex parking lot in the 300 block of North Ewing Avenue, near East Eighth Street. The men then went to her apartment, where she lives with her husband and five children. One robber held a gun to the woman’s 10-month-old daughter’s head, police said. The men stole nearly $2,000 worth of cash and electronics. Minutes later, the robbers encountered one of the brothers on a second-floor balcony and forced him into his apartment, police said. Police do not believe the shootings were drug- or gang-related, Miller said. More information here.

3 dead in Wilmette murder-suicide, murderer had killed before

Wilmette police found the three bodies in a house on the 800 block of Greenleaf Avenue while performing a well being check on the occupants. Preliminary evidence is said to suggest that the man fatally shot the woman and the teenager before turning the gun on himself. Police are withholding the names of the individuals until their families can be notified.
UPDATE: The man who lived at the house in question was reportedly sentenced to 30 years in prison for stabbing his 25-year-old wife to death back in 1985. He claimed insanity, saying that he committed that homicide while suffering from “intermittent explosive disorder.”
UPDATE 2: Neighbors have identified the shooter as Richard C. Wiley, and his victims as Kathy Wiley-Motes and her son Christopher Motes.  Kathy was a church office coordinator, and Chris was a 17 year old student at New Trier.  More information here.

Man charged with murder of Eddy Curry’s ex, 9 month old girl

Police have charged a suspect with the January 24, 2009 murders of Nova Henry, an ex of former Bulls basketball player Eddy Curry, and her 9 month old daughter Ava Curry. Police allege that 36 year old Frederick Goings entered Nova Henry’s South Loop apartment, and then killed her and the young child after a dispute. Police also say that they have forensic and surveillance evidence against Goings, who had previously had an order of protection against him after allegedly stalking Henry. More information here.

Mother and daughter stabbed during Northwest Side home invasion

Shortly before midnight on Valentines Day, a mother and her daughter were brutally stabbed and left in critical condition. Police say that an ex-boyfriend allegedly entered the woman’s home, which is on the 2500 block of North Lowell Avenue in the Hermosa neighborhood, and then attacked. A suspect is in police custody, but has not yet been charged. The victims are being treated at Illinois Masonic Medical Center, according to a city official.  More information here.

Home Invaders Murder Father, Pistol Whip Wife and Children

58-year-old small business-owner Robert Chae was pronounced dead at his home with multiple stab wounds, after home invaders entered his home to steal money. Police said the suspects attacked Mr. Chae as he was preparing to leave for work. Chae’s wife and two children were forced into the basement where they were bound with duct tape and pistol whipped. Police in Michigan reportedly said that a man used an 8-inch knife to attack the 44-year-old woman, who had a protection order barring him from contacting her, as her young children watched. More information here.

6 Year Old Boy Kidnapped in Home Invasion

An Amber Alert has been issued for a 6-year-old Las Vegas boy kidnapped this morning during a home invasion and robbery, Las Vegas Police reportedly said. The child, Cole Puffinburger, was kidnapped at gunpoint shortly after 7 a.m The crime appears to be random, police said, adding that the mother didn’t know the men. More information here.

Chicago Mom and Child Injured Jumping From Window To Escape Home invader

A woman and her daughter were injured when they landed face first after jumping from a second floor window to escape an armed, masked, duct tape carrying home invader on Chicago’s south side. They jumped to escape the home invader, who they believed was going to kill them. More information here.

Home invaders kill teen hiding in bedroom

Atlanta, GA police said three intruders forced their way into the home at night. Devontae Alexander Jones, a junior at Carver High School, tried to hide inside a bedroom, but was fatally shot in the head. The criminals also shot and killed the family’s dog. More information here.

NJ Man In Critical Condition After Home Invasion Shooting

A Pemberton Township, NJ man was reportedly shot by an intruder who broke into his home at approximately 2:30 a.m. The victim, Trashan Rushing, is being treated for a gunshot wound to the head that has reportedly left him in critical condition. His young children and other relatives were reportedly asleep in the home when three criminals who were wearing hoods and masks broke into the home and demanded money. More information here.

Babysitter Accused in Armed Home Invasion

A baby sitter accused of taking part in an armed home invasion appeared in bond court on Monday morning. Janette Martinez, 22, and her boyfriend, Fernando Luis Gaston, are reportedy accused of invading an FL home and pistol-whipping the resident on Saturday night, whose 7 year old child she reportedly babysat. Mother and Small Children Held at Gunpoint During Home Invasion Robbery

Police have reportedly made one arrest after an early morning home invasion at the Coolivan Apartments off Sixth Street in Lexington, KS. Police have reportedly charged 31-year-old Lashonda Martin with 1st degree robbery. Officers say they are still searching for three other suspects who broke down down a door at the apartment building and held a mother and two small children at gunpoint inside during the robbery. Man Sentenced to Life in Prison For Child Rape

A man on was reportedly sentenced to life in prison after he kidnapped and raped a 5 year old girl. Matthew Cook Casey, 37, kidnapped the child from her Williamson home on Dec. 14, 2006 and raped her in his car, accoridng to a release from U.S. Attorney Chuck Miller’s office. Earlier that day, Casey raped a 55-year-old woman in South Williamson, Ky., the same release indicated. More information here.
