Steven Hayes convicted in Petit murder case

Steven Hayes and a codefendant allegedly invaded the Petits’ Cheshire, CT, home around 3:00 AM on July 23, 2007, taking a husband, wife, and their daughters prisoner. At 9:00 AM, the intruders forced the wife, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, to go to the bank and withdraw a large sum of money. She was reportedly able to alert a bank employee that her family was being held captive, but by the time police arrived at the house it was on fire. The suspects tried to flee, but crashed their getaway vehicle into two police cars that were part of a roadblock.William Petit, the husband, had been badly beaten, but managed to escape his home with severe head wounds and seek help at a neighbor’s house. Autopsies of Hawke-Petit and her daughters showed that Hawke-Petit was strangled and her daughters died of smoke inhalation. More information here.

Gay Waiter Stabbed in Apparent Hate Crime

The stabbing of a gay waiter inside a Santa Monica, California Denny’s restaurant was a hate crime, according to police. According to news reports, employees of the Denny’s were sitting at a table before the restaurant opened when a man knocked on the restaurant’s window and asked to use the bathroom. When the man was allowed inside, he approached the table, and then asked a waiter if he was gay, police say. When the waiter replied that he was gay, the man allegedly stabbed the waiter in the neck with a knife. A suspect, reportedly identified as 24 year old Curtis Martin, is said to have been taken into custody for investigation of attempted murder and committing a hate crime. More information here.

Woman, Father Stabbed

Roseville police have charged a 21-year-old Detroit man with stabbing his girlfriend and then turning the knife on her stepfather when he tried to protect her during an argument late Wednesday at a residence in the 26000 block of Pinehurst. When police arrived at the Pinehurst residence they found the 20-year-old victim suffering from two stab wounds to her left leg and her father being stabbed multiple times in his stomach and back, police said. Deputy Police Chief James P. Berlin said the stepfather attempted to keep the man from stabbing his daughter, and was himself stabbed as a result. Both victims were reportedly taken to an area hospital. The woman was treated and then released while her stepfather reportedly remains listed in critical condition after several hours of surgery. Nova Southeastern Professor Murdered by Violent Home Invader

A Nova Southeastern University science professor is dead following an overnight home invasion. Police say that an armed man entered the home around 12:34 a.m. at Northwest Sixth Court and 75th Terrace in Plantation, tied up a married couple and robbed them. Police spokesman Detective Robert Rettig said the robber then fatally shot the 46-year-old man. Investigators say the intruder then set multiple fires inside the house before fleeing the scene. The woman escaped the burning house with her 5-year-old child. She ran to a neighbor’s house and he called the police. When firefighters arrived on scene they discovered the victim inside the home. The 43-year-old was airlifted to the Alfred Hospital after allegedly being stabbed twice in the chest and slashed on his arms. Police have arrested a 31-year-old man. Police said the incident took place in Bilson St about 8.30pm. It is believed two men went to the house following a dispute with the alleged victim earlier in the day. “When the pair arrived at the house they called out to the resident and then went inside,” Sen-Constable Wayne Wilson said. Moviegoer stabbed for complaining about another’s cell phone use

The California theater was packed for a 9 p.m. Saturday screening of the Martin Scorsese film when the moviegoer complained about a woman near him using a cellphone. The woman and two men with her left the theater. But sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said two men returned a few minutes later and stabbed the victim. “It was a vicious and cowardly attack,” Whitmore said. The victim, who was not identified, was hospitalized with serious wounds. Two other moviegoers who came to the victim’s aid were also hurt during the attack, officials said. More information here.

Police say that a gunman shot a 63-year-old man in the legs and his 39-year-old son in the neck at a business they own on the third floor of a Dallas office building. Dallas Police Lt. Andrew Harvey said the gunman pointed his gun at arriving police, who fired at him and missed. The suspect then shot himself, police said, causing critical injuries. “This is not a random offense. Chicago Taxi Driver Stabbed in Robbery Attempt

A taxi cab driver was stabbed and critically injured Thursday night by a passenger in the West Town neighborhood during a robbery attempt, according to police. The attack occured at about 11:30 p.m. near Western Avenue and Hirsch Street, said Chicago Police Officer Hector Alfaro. Police are searching for a hooded gunman who horrified the congregation of a California church when he paced the aisles then pulled out a gun and shot two teenagers. No arrests have yet been made in the Sunday shooting at New Gethsemane Church of God in Christ in Richmond, California, according to police. The gunman and two companions walked into the church, scanned the pews and fired about five shots, hitting a 14-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man, as about 100 people looked on, police say. Huntsville, Alabama police say that a female professor at the University of Alabama opened fire on her colleagues at a biology faculty meeting. It is alleged that the professor, reportedly identified as Amy Bishop, opened fire after she learned that she was being denied tenure. Three faculty members were killed, and three other people — two faculty members and one staff member — were taken to Huntsville Hospital, with injuries ranging from serious to critical. man sentenced to 25 years for brutal beating of girlfriend and her father

On April 25, 2008, Armando Jacobo dropped off his girlfriend after a date that had ended with a fight. He later returned and began to beat and kick both his girlfriend and her father. With a tree branch, he ripped his girlfriend’s lip off her face and left her eyes swollen shut from the beating. Jacobo also beat and kicked the woman’s father when he tried to save his daughter, breaking the man’s ankle, knocking out some of his teeth, and causing him severe brain injuries. The judge called this “one of the most vicious attacks on two human beings I’ve ever seen.” Armando Jacobo, a 23 year old man from Joliet, plead guilty to attempted murder and aggravated battery on a senior citizen, and was sentenced to 25 years on those charges. Home invaders brutally stab Streamwood man

A pair of teenagers, aged 16 and 18, have been charged with attempted first degree murder, armed robbery, and aggravated battery in connection with the home invasion robbery and stabbing of a Streamwood man. Police say that a 16 year old Schaumburg High School student, 18 year old Carmichael Nation (a Jamaican national), and a 3rd accomplice who is at large, entered the home of a Streamwood man to steal a safe on Saturday morning. The suspects allegedly held down the victim, stabbed him in the stomach, chest, and legs, and robbed him. The victim has undergone extensive surgery to repair the damage caused by the stabbing that he suffered, and is reportedly in stable condition as St. Alexius Hospital. More information here.

An apartment building handyman allegedly stabbed two tenants several times during a robbery and has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, Chicago police said Sunday. Thaddeus Gunnell, 36, of the 300 block of 154th Place, Calumet City, has also been charged with two counts of home invasion for the incident that happened about 6 a.m. Saturday in the 5000 block of South Cornell Ave., Chicago. Police say he entered the apartment of a 48-year-old man and 50-year-old woman, armed with a knife, and demanded money. When the woman refused, Gunnell allegedly stabbed her several times.
